How Much Do You Know About the Shaker in the Oil Drilling System?

Shakers are an integral component of the drilling system in oil and gas drilling operations. They are large, flat vibrating screens that are used to separate the cuttings from the drilling fluid or mud.

Types of Shaker

Single layer shaker

Figure 1 shows a single layer vibrating screen. In the past, most shakers used were of this type. They have fairly coarse screens, so only coarser formation particles (cuttings, spalls and coarse sand) are removed. Additionally, finer sand and silt remain in the drilling fluid. Another problem with this type of screen is its inefficiency.

Differential single layer shaker

Figure 2 shows the structure of the differential monolayer shaking table. The screens are said to be "parallel" and the angle at which the screens are tilted varies.

Double-Deck Shale Shakers

Most modern drilling units now have double-deck shakers fitted. These have a second, finer screen in “series,” which removes most of the finer particles. The other screen size can be up to 150 mesh (104 μm).

Multiple Shakers

Multiple vibrating screens adopt a single-layer structure, and three or four screens are placed at different heights in a "tandem" manner.

Shakers performance and design features

The working principle of the shakers is to realize the screening of materials by swinging the sieve surface. According to the different particle sizes and densities of the materials, the materials with large particles are gradually moved upwards, and the materials with small particles fall to the bottom layer through the sieve holes.

Shaker has the characteristics of large amplitude, high screening efficiency and strong processing capacity, which can meet different types of solid control requirements.

The design of the shakers adopt two forms: linear and elliptical. Among them, the linear shaker has high screening efficiency and low noise, but the processing capacity is relatively small; the elliptical shaker has a large processing capacity, but the noise is relatively large.

The amplitude and frequency of the shaker can be adjusted by adjusting the position, weight, angle, etc. of the vibrator to suit different processing requirements.

The screen of the shakers is made of high-quality steel, which has the characteristics of wear resistance and corrosion resistance, and the size of the screen hole can also be adjusted according to needs.

Set Shaker Reminders

Use enough shakers to provide enough non-blank screen area to run a 100-mesh or finer screen. Shaker settings should adequately handle solids laden fluids at maximum flow rates within any significant hole interval.

For double-deck shakers, run a coarser screen on top and a finer screen on the bottom. Coarse mesh should be at least two meshes thicker. Note if the bottom screen is broken. Replace or repair cracked screens immediately. Cover 75% to 80% of the bottom screen with mud to maximize the usable screen area. A reflow tray is recommended for better coverage and throughput.

Try running all the same mesh screens for a single deck shaker with parallel screens. If a coarser screen is required to prevent mud loss, a maximum of two meshes should be installed on the shaker at the same time, with the finer mesh screen closest to the possum's belly. Both grids should have approximately the same opening size. For example, use a combination of 100 mesh (140u) and 80 mesh (178u) instead of 100 mesh (140u) and 50 mesh (279u). Cover 75% to 80% of the screen area with mud to properly utilize the screen surface area.
